Some Things Are Just Hard To Accept, The State of The Chiefs Receiving Corps, Kareem Hunt & My Fantasy Football Nemesis, Last Word on Pro Football is Trash, & Bunches and Bunches More!
You know Gary, we've always had this weird dynamic of despite you being the Chiefs fan in the chat, I've been the one taking up for how great Rashee Rice is, meanwhile you try to convince me Patrick has been dealing with historically bad receiver groups last year and this. To me, any receiving group with a player that good on it must stop short of historically bad. From here on though, if Rashee is out for any significant amount of time, I will be dramatically easier to convince.
This hurts Patrick Mahomes specifically, as a man who (according to NGS) has always struggled throwing into tight coverage, he relies on his receivers a lot. This is not part of the popular Mahomes narrative, and I've never really been sure why it's not part of the Mahomes narrative. His skill is surveying the field and finding a receiver that's actually open to throw to, and never forcing the ball into coverage. He's prodigious at that. What he's not great at is throwing balls into tight windows.
Just to be clear, Pat's skillset is the much better to have than to have some wicked arm but throw into traffic all the time, but that's why this situation is beginning to scare me. A man whose main skillset is surveying the field and finding the right place to put the ball, but lacking some in the arm talent category (his pass accuracy stats have never been particularly impressive) is more prone than most to struggle if his receivers cannot find any open space.
The Chiefs' pass offence has looked putrid ever since Baltimore, with Pat putting up about five points below expectation since then, and that was with Rashee Rice. Hopefully, a suitable replacement is on the way, because if it isn't, it's possible we could be looking at a legitimately bad Chiefs' pass offence for the first time in a while.
Life is kicking my butt at the moment, so I can’t reply to you at length. Here’s my quick answer:
Last year’s WRs were historically bad- except for Rashee, and he didn’t really come on until well into the back half of the season/playoffs. I believe that’s what I said to you, but I’ll go back and check to verify it.
As for this year, I made no mention or case for the receivers being historically bad. What I did say was this: “The one guy we don’t currently have to worry about (at least on the field) and the main reason I have confidence the offense will just keep getting better is Rashee Rice (as seen in the above GIF). He has looked nearly unstoppable in every game this year.
“He is currently 4th in the NFL in receiving yards (two players ahead of him have already played their Week 4 games) and 3rd in YPG amongst players who have played every possible game this season. He leads the league in YAC and is 3rd in receptions behind Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson of the NY Giants, who have played one more game.”
Obviously, this was written right before his injury. I also basically said (I’m paraphrasing here) he would be the rising tide that lifts up all the boats. His dominance was going to open up easier/more opportunities for the other guys.
With him, they were getting better.
Without him, Travis Kelce and Noah Gray are their most reliable pass catchers. Unless Juju can revert to 2022 Juju.
Most of the WRs haven’t shown us that they can be reliable targets more than a couple times a game. And, in the case of Skyy Moore, not even that.
I am encouraged by the return and resurgence of Kareem Hunt. If that continues (I sure hope it continues- everyone loves a redemption story), it will take some of the pressure off of Patrick.
As for Patrick? Something’s undeniably off with him (his mechanics seem off and he’s getting happy feet a lot) but I think he’ll get it figured out.
The recent history of the NFL is littered with the bones of all the people who’ve doubted him. He’s someone who seems to need that doubt (or 10 point deficits- it’s insane he’s never lost a game where he was down by 10 points) to kick him up from an above-average QB to MVPatrick.
The Chiefs are 4-0 mostly because the Defense has been great and Patrick and the offense (they don’t deserve the capital ‘O’ yet) have done just enough.
I don't think Substack is where nerds go to write. After all, I have a Sub...oh no.
Anyway, I believe the Chiefs have secret deals with many, many heart doctors. Because they do this every week. You'd think we'd learn not to stress about it, but I for one am a very slow learner.
I’m still recovering from that game. It may have taken some years off of my life, and I’m not sure I’ve got too many to spare.
I’m really hoping that we get some better than expected news on Rashee’s injury. That would be great for him, the Chiefs, and all of us who can’t understand why any passes are going in Skyy Moore’s direction.
Enjoy the 3-0 start as a KC fan. The Chiefs could easily be 0-3, and Taylor Swift would have to stay in disguise to have any chance at stepping in to Arrowhead.
Haha! Yeah, complaining about how the team wins when they’re 3-0 is the epitome of “rich people problems.” When I’m writing Chiefs Chronicles, I forget that there are a lot of teams who wish they had the problems KC has.
A costly win for the Chiefs. I had a hyperextended knee when I was 10 or 11. Never went to the doctor. Just limped around for several months. Hoping for a best case scenario for Rashee.
I shouldn’t feel like this after a win. Time for a nap.

Once he gets dialed in?
And he will get dialed in.
We shall see.

Yup. We nerds, alright!

I’m guessing around 31.🤓

I know this game is doing it to me. This stinks.
